11When a 100-N bag of nails hangs motionless from a single vertical strand of rope, how many newtons...?

When a 100-N bag of nails hangs motionless from a single vertical strand of rope, how many newtons of tension are exerted in the strand? How about if the bag is supported by four vertical strands?

please explain what this question is asking, and what the answer is and why. i really want to try and understand physics. thanks =)11When a 100-N bag of nails hangs motionless from a single vertical strand of rope, how many newtons...?
this is one of newton's laws, the second which states that ';The rate of change of momentum of a body is proportional to the resultant force acting on the body and is in the same direction.'; this is represented by the equation F = ma where F=force, m=mass of object and a=acceleration (in free-fall, it is equivalent to the acceleration due to gravity or g=9.81m/s.

taking your example, when you hang an object weighing 100N by a single rope, the force exrted by the rope is also 100N although in the opposite direction. the direction of the force of the bag of nails is downward and direction of the force exerted by the rope is upwards.

if there are four strands tied to the bag, the total force exerted by each strand will be equal to 100N but the force in each strand is different depending on the angle made by the strand with respect to the vertical y-axis.11When a 100-N bag of nails hangs motionless from a single vertical strand of rope, how many newtons...?
it is motionless. therefore, the tension exerted in a single strand or four vertical strand is still 100-N.

IN A SINGLE STRAND:

tension acts upward because the nails hangs.

the nails are being pulled by gravity, but it is motionless.

the nails are not accelerating nor decelerating, so the force up is equal with the force down.

force = (mass)(acceleration)

force=(100-N)(it is motionless)

force=(100-N)(0)

LLl -----%26gt; box of nails

NO FORCE. BUT TENSION IS 100_N.

ON FOUR VERTICAL STRANDS.

net force is always, always, always equal to the mass times the acceleration. therefore the force on four vertical strand is zero because it is motionless.

IF THE STRANDS ARE EQUALLY DISTRUBUTED, THERE ARE 25-N ON EACH STRAND.
the bag is being supported by the rope,so downward force=upward force

mg=T

mg=100N

so T=100N

if there r 4 ropes the T is equally distributrd among the ropes

t=100/4=25N
